Countdown

The countdown to summer is on and we're ready at the Brown house. Now, don't get me wrong, I have this faint recollection of summers past: of 1 trillion degree days we could hardly stand to be outside -- but at this point, we just want to toss away our alarm clocks and schedules and just hang out.

The weather has been so nice that its fun just to run around in the backyard. Miles typically leads the others in some sort of costume/pretend play.

And just general fooling around.

Miles. Sweet Miles. He was so tired the other day. He sat down for a minute and just fell asleep. He's ready for the end of spelling tests, AR (reading) tests, journal entries, and having to be up-and-at-em at 7am. His last day is June 10th. Definitely on the horizon.

PS Still working with this little guy on potty training and still hoping we'll be over this hump by swimming pool season. He is a slow work in progress (knows how, but is so laid back he sometimes can't be bothered with it all). Ah, Griffy...

Dan Nicholas Park

We took our second adventure to Dan Nicholas Park.  We had such a fun group -- including our favorite neighbors: the Bass/Marler families (and the Reece family came down for the day on Saturday), some fun family: Shannon and Mason (and Dana came down for the day on Saturday), some familiar faces: the Burkes/Patrizios, and some new faces: the Mandells.  I'm already excited for next time.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the weekend, mostly because they remind me of fun/funny parts of the trip.

Love the way Noah is looking at Aunt Dana here (those middle kids...). Something about silly Aunt Dana being afraid of a dinosaur on the train ride...

Dana came down for the day on Saturday. It rocked having her there.

For about 20 minutes on Saturday we were convinced that all 10 kids had raging cases of lice. Thank goodness someone suggested we give the kids showers "just to be sure." It was dirt & ash from the fire.

Bikes (and scooters) were the hit of the weekend. You couldn't leave a bike idle without it being stolen.

Isn't our niece breathtaking? The boys LOVED hanging out with her for the weekend.

So glad Griffin's BFF, Jack, and his parents joined us for the day on Saturday!

I still remember why we were laughing in the picture. Blake, Shannon, Mike - remember? hehe

I made a little video for the kids with some clips from the weekend. Ignore the abrupt song change mid-way through. Sir Mix-A-Lot I am not. I'm working on it though. :) (Also, just decided that I want one of my mother-son wedding dances to be to the Tom Petty song "Wildflowers". Seriously. Love that song.)

The Greenway & Ice Cream

The Sunday after Noah's birthday party we found ourselves with an empty house and much to celebrate (mere hours until Noah turned 5!). We headed out to one of our local greenways for some exercise. We followed it up with dinner out and then ice cream for dessert. An incredible Sunday!

(PS I am terrible about video and am committing myself to start taking more "everyday" video. Still testing out the best way to share it - here are 2 options. Let me know if the one you used worked well or not.)

Option 1 (Quality much better)

Noah B

(my much overdue post about Noah. feel like its pretty long - and hope it starts to make up for a skimpy, 2nd-child baby book :) feel like i could go on forever with these posts, and have to force myself to just stop typing...)

Noah B. Our middle son. A boy filled with such sweetness and great love. He amazes me each day with his tenderness and kindness. With his love for others. With his empathy and thoughtfulness of others. His heart amazes me.
DSC_0240

Noah loves to laugh. He has this awesome belly laugh that makes me laugh when I hear it. He gets carried away whenever his brothers do something funny, when there is fun music playing on the ipod, whenever he can, really. He's also a five-year-old boy, so he's big on the potty humor these days (which is not allowed, but still creeps in). The other day I was read a line in a book that was "B is for the Butler who snuck away in the night." He started giggling immediately and said, "mom...you said butt...." I explained what a butler was and still 2 minutes later he flipped over and in a sing-songy voice said, "mom....look at my butler..." He said it with such a sweet face and such a funny laugh, I couldn't help but giggle myself. :)
DSC_0167
DSC_0156

This picture is the epitomy of Noah to me. Snuggled up. Laughing. Eyes twinkling. It also perfectly demonstrates his combined shyness in new situations/yet interest in what is going on. I love it.
DSC_0164

He is such a snuggler (at least with me, and lately with Mike and his brothers too). He's big on physical closeness and touch. When he wakes up in the morning, he'll come find me and ask for "loves". If I'm laying around on the floor or the couch while we're talking, its not unusual for him to snuggle right in. He loves to give and receive huge hugs and still loves kisses (though I'm guessing as a boy, he'll drop these soon).
DSC_0166

Noah has not been a huge sports nut to date, but he does love to play outside. He loves to swing (still learning how to pump his legs) and especially loves a huge "underdog" push. He loves playing with his brothers in the playhouse treefort and jumpy slide and he always has a ball on nature hikes (though he'll assure us on the drive there that he does NOT want to go. :).
DSC_0188
DSC_0060

Noah decided just last week that he wanted to start taking karate with Miles and some other neighborhood boys. I'm excited that he's interested in it. Noah can be pretty clumbsy (the type of kid that will be eating his dinner one minute and one the floor the next minute) and it is no surprise to me that he has already knocked out two teeth (one during a chasing match with his brothers about a year ago and another due to a wrestling match with Mike last week). His second tooth popped out midway through his first karate class. Think it made him feel like a rock star amidst all of the "big kids". :)
DSC_0212

If Noah is anything, he is a brother. He adores is brothers. He loves them unconditionally. He wants nothing more than to be with them. Always. Noah lights up around Griffin. He's constantly hugging and picking up Griffin (sometimes to Griff's dismay) and he loves to run around with Griffin, making up silly games or just playing back and forth with their lovies/guys. They are great playmates and laugh a ton together.
DSC_0261
Noah looks up to Miles and wants to do everything he is doing. The two share common passions - drawing, legos, etc.. so they are often drawn to the same activities. Noah looks to Miles for affirmation and to share a laugh with. If I take Noah and Griffin on an adventure and Miles does something else, Noah asks about him or mentions periodically that "Miles would like this too". When Noah unwrapped the Lego StarWars Wii game that his grandparents gave him on his birthday, he stopped everything so that he could find Miles and tell him how excited he was that they could play the game together. It was precious and totally something that Noah would do.
DSC_0085
Noah is also 'the great encourager'. He is the brother that will listen to his brothers' stories or check out their artwork/project/building and said, "that's cool!" or "wow, I love that!" He's the one that will say, "I want Miles and Griffin to be able to invite a special friend to my party too." When I ask if the boys want a book/movie/game, etc.., he'll look to his brothers and say, "which one do YOU want?" On Miles' birthday I kept overhearing him say, "no, you should go first. Its your birthday." Maybe he's already settling in to the "peacekeeper" characteristic that is common of middle children?
DSC_0176

At times, Noah can be very shy and reserved. He gets nervous about new experiences, particularly those where he feels he needs to perform (e.g. school, t-ball) and he'll show these feelings in either tears or clingyness or both (he was pulled out of my car crying about a dozen times during the first few months of school). This circumstantial tentativeness led his teachers to recommend that he attend TK/transitional kindergarten next year instead of going straight to kindergarten. But he also can be very brave when he sets his heart/mind to it...like at his Aunt Dana & Uncle Brad's wedding. After his showing at the rehearsal dinner (very shy/nervous in the beginning and then silly/rambunctious at the end) we decided that he would not be in the ceremony. But, he decided that it was VERY important to him and he knew that he could handle. And he did. He was brave. He stood very still (are wore a smile the entire time). I was very proud of him.
DSC_0218

Noah's school held a 'donuts for dad' a couple of months ago. The teachers had documented what all the kids said they most liked to do with their dads. Noah said, "He makes me happy. I wrestle with him. He give me love." In true Noah style, he was the only child that shared how their dad makes him FEEL: HAPPY. It made me teary.
DSC04009

Noah is in a huge wii phase. Favorite games are Lego Batman, Lego Star Wars and Mario Kart. Its not uncommon for his first/last/dinner conversations to be about some intricate aspect of the games. We limit how much all of the boys play, but he is still semi-obsessed with it. Maybe just a boy thing. :)
DSC_0230

Noah is a great artist -- loves to draw, do projects. He's also our resident lefty (taking after his Grandpa Bob and his Great-Grandma T). His teachers told me after he'd been at the school for a couple of months that he has great handwriting for a lefty (the best at writing his letters in the class) -- and that he'd often pick the art table when the class had free play (they would have preferred him to pick something more social). I think it was half interest for him and half because he was still figuring out his footing, who is favorite friends would be. Noah loves the ladies at school (and will often get a tiny smile if I talk about his favorite girl/friend at the time) I think because he can be on the more gentle/mind-mannered side (though don't get me wrong, he loves to be silly and can wrestle with the best of them). Soon after, he became good friends with 2 boys across the hall, that have personalities similar to his, and he started meeting them in "the block room" during free play.
DSC_0268

Noah can be really animated when he's excited or taken by surprise. He'll raise his shoulders up and give a sweet smile if you tell him something that makes him really happy -- something as simple as "I love you Noah" will bring out this response.
DSC_0099
He also makes this very big, opened mouth faces a lot. This particular face was because they saw a caterpillar (or something like that) on this old tractor. You'd get the same response from "hey, should we watch a movie tonight?", "should we go to big daddy's restaurant for dinner tonight?", etc... I love the passion and the exuberance. I totally love it.
DSC_0178

Where some people are great thinkers, Noah is a great feeler. He loves so deeply and in turn can feel disappointment and sadness so deeply. I think one comes with the other and that's just the way it is. But, Noah is a guy to have in your corner. He can be tentative about selecting his favorite friends, but once he does, he is tried and true. I think he's going to be one of the guys that continues to make close friends as he grows up, adding one or two here or there, and never letting go of the "old" ones. He's loyal and will love you for YOU.
DSC_0170

I love this boy. With all of my heart. I proud to be his mother. And feel blessed for every moment with him. As he tells me everyday and I say right back to him "Noah, I-love-you-to-infinity-and-beyond."

Noah's 5th Birthday

Noah had such a great birthday weekend. He celebrated over dinners with both sets of grandparents and Aunt Dana and Uncle Brad. On top of that, he LOVED his rockin' party with all of his favorite boys (and the addition of his great pal, Ella, toward the end of the event) -- from his current school, his old school, and of course, some favorite family friends, Jack, Ryan, and Heydon. He smiled throughout the ENTIRE party.

At one point during the party, Noah and I went inside to go to the bathroom. We took a couple of silly pictures in the mirror and then I leaned in to give him a hug and told him that I loved him and was so proud of him. He looked at me with his huge, sparkly eyes, released a huge grin, and in a sweet, soft voice said, "mom, tell me why you're so proud of me." I teared up and went on and on about how he is so loving, and kind, and tenderhearted, and brave, and generous, and funny. How he's an amazing friend, brother, and son. How I love him with all my heart. Oh how I love him.

I especially love this video that Aunt Dana captured while everyone was singing Happy Birthday to Noah. He laughed all the way through it -- tickled with himself that he'd already blown out the candle (as soon as Mike lit it) and then after he blew out his candle he did a giddy little penguin dance that I've never seen before. Every time I watch it, I laugh out loud. There is also a funny clip of two of his friends giving a shout-out to where they picked up his gifts. Hilarious.

I was teary all day on Noah's birthday -- very emotional, very sentimental, very happy. I haven't been this teary over a birthday since Miles' 1st. It just feels big to me. It feels like a particularly huge milestone in Noah's life. He's 5. He's five. Wow.

I ♥ Faces: Smiles

This week's I ♥ Faces theme is 'smiles'. I love this picture of Griffin looking back at me through the soccer net. He and his big brothers are growing up quickly...here's hoping they always remember look back and smile at their mom every now and again. :)

Noah is 5!

Today we are hosting a party to celebrate this amazing, fantastic, loving, fun, incredible FIVE year old (well, he will be in a couple of days). Can't believe how fast he is flying through life. I'm so proud of the boy he is and so excited to celebrate with him all day.
Noah is 5
(Notice his smile! He lost another tooth on Thursday afternoon. Will be sending out the details of this and much more about Noah in his very own post next week.)

In true Brown family luck/spirit, its been a rainy morning and we have an outdoor party planned. No joke, this has happened to at least 80% of our parties over the years. We've rescheduled/modified more parties than I can count. My sweet friends have already been calling to laugh/console/offer tables, etc.. Looks like a another garage/driveway party. Don't hold your breath on the likes of the pictures coming out of the day. My dad and I will just do our best.... :)

Brothers

Snapped this impromptu picture last night after dinner/before bed. Love how their hands are all over each other. Love how they are so close to each other. Love how they love each other.

Mike's Birthday

We celebrated Mike's 38th birthday on the 10th. We kept it all pretty low-key (as he requested, given his crazy travel lately) and had a nice family celebration. The two of us got a sitter on Saturday morning and worked out and then went to brunch. It was awesome - probably my favorite kind of date. That afternoon we had cake and opened presents. I had a special triathlon cake made for him. :) The next day a neighborhood family came over for a cookout and then the husband and Mike went for a bike ride together. All-in-all, a perfect, relaxed celebration!

Mike's bday

Thought it would be fun to include a few pics of Mike when he was around the ages of our boys now.

Here is Mike at age 3.5 ~

Here is Mike at age 6, taken when he was in 1st grade ~

I love old pictures and memories. Mike's mom gave us a big box of his stuff about a year ago. It was full of report cards, pictures, artwork, etc.. One of these days I'll scan them all and put them in a nice album for him/the kids - maybe even make a little video montage of them. Not holding my breath on the timing, but its definitely on "the list". :)

T-Ball

To date, the boys haven't participated in any team sports. They both love to swim and Miles loves karate -- but they've always shyed away or shown disinterest anytime I mentioned a team sport. (To be honest, I've been kind of bummed about it -- the whole idea of our entire family out on the field on Saturday mornings is so appealing to me.) But - the times might be changing. I signed both boys up for t-ball at the Y (their friends Jack & Ella are playing too). Its a 4-6 year old clinic, perfectly suited for Miles and Noah since they are total beginners.

We went to Dick's a couple of nights before their first Saturday clinic and loaded up on a t-stand, bats, balls, and gloves (I took a few pics with my iphone). The kids tried on the helmets immediately. Thank goodness, because as soon as Griffin picked up a (heavy) bat, he clocked Noah on the head with it (yikes).

When we were checking out, the saleswomen asked Miles who was going to be playing t-ball. Miles told her that he and Noah would be. Griffin started yelling emphatically, "no! I play t-ball! I play t-ball!" Glad this kid is almost 3. He's ready to hit the field!
IMG_0144

On Friday afternoon we took our new equipment for a swing. I wanted to be sure the kids had at least some idea of what to do with the heavier ball/bat before the big day. Go Miles!

These two pictures crack me up. Literally the first time Mike pitched the ball to Noah, Noah nailed it right back to him. Took us all by surprise.

On Saturday morning, Mike and Miles took off for the field (more on Noah's whereabouts later). From the sounds of it, Miles really liked it. Mike said Miles raised his hand/answered questions the coach asked (a huge sign for Miles that he felt comfortable and confident) and had fun participating in the drills. Can't wait to see him and Noah next time!
