Miles

Holding myself accountable to write a little update on each of the boys. Miles' turn.

Miles. What an incredible boy.
DSC_0180

He is a thinker. A processor. A detail-guy. He is very literal (yet loves idioms - thinks they are hilarious). He is a visual learner (he'll watch a movie once and be able to discuss minute details about it months later). He loves to dance (note to self - buy this visual learner some break-dancing videos!) He loves to draw, loves art projects (I can totally see him wearing "customized" chuck taylors someday -- covered with his doodling). He loves to build and creates amazing contraptions with his legos. I can see him as a great swimmer or skate boarder or runner someday. He's really spunky and fast, so he might even be a wrestler (hoping they come up with hipper suits over the next 10 years). He loves Mario Brothers and Lego Batman (2 Wii games), Star Wars (movies, figures, books), playing on our playset and jumpy slide, and reading in bed after lights out (Dana & Brad - checkmate on the hat w/ the light!). He is a phenomenal older brother (a playmate, a helper, a teacher). He is s-i-l-l-y.

Miles loves to swim and loves karate. He's been taking karate every Thursday afternoon for the past seven months. He was so excited a few weeks ago when he was named the "Star Student" of the week. Every once in awhile I ask Miles if he is still liking karate...if he wants to continue. He always answers the same way: "mom, I'll be ready to stop as soon as I earn a black belt." Love the enthusiasm and the confidence.

We signed Miles up for soccer at the Y just after he turned 4. He lasted about 2 weeks. There were (literally) hundreds of kids on the fields and all he wanted to do was sit on the sidelines and avoid the action. He'd perk up as soon as it was time to head to the playground to play with Noah, so we ultimately decided to take him out of his misery and just wait until he expressed interest in a team sport. A month or so, he finally mentioned that he'd be up for trying t-ball, so I signed him (and Noah) up for a Saturday team/clinic at the Y. Their friends Jack & Ella will be doing it too, which will definitely add to the fun. We've started "practicing" in the backyard (I use the word very loosely). :)

Let's be honest. If Miles is anything, he is silly. Its just his thing.
DSC_0176
Being silly makes him laugh, and of course, he's aiming to get everyone else to laugh too. I asked him the other day who the funniest kid in his class was. He thought for a second, as if scrolling through the class list, and then announced, "Me!" I found it hilarious and awesome that he finds himself to be the funniest one, whether others would rank him the same or not. Mostly, because it shows me that he has self-confidence, which is so important.
DSC_0178
He did follow that up with, "but if you're going to be the funniest one, you're going to get in trouble a lot." Miles is big on the "one liners" and funny/goofy faces - most suitable for the playground, verses the classroom (he's also at the age where an accidental burp is hilarious). But, to his defense, his teacher has assured me he's very good (so I'm assuming that he's not getting "in trouble" anymore than every other student). I guess it just also highlights that he's a "rule follower" - so when he isn't following every rule to a "t", he's aware of it and its probably magnified to him.
DSC_0179

Speaking of school, he's doing really well. He gets quarterly progress reports and is always "consistently meeting expectations" (which unfortunately, if the highest mark you can get). On his March report his teacher also commented, "Miles continues doing well in first grade. He excels in math and is a good worker and an attentive listener." Miles definitely takes after Mike in the math department. He'll probably pass my skills in a few years and I'll be googling left and right trying to figure out how to help him with his homework. Spelling is not his strong suit, so we have to work really hard studying his spelling words each week (1st grade is the big time w/ a spelling test every Friday!), but as long as he puts in the time, he does well. Here's an example of something that he wrote in school today. The assignment was to write things about yourself. (It kills me/I love that he wrote "I am cool")
DSC_0101
Here is another assignment THAT-I-LOVE that he brought home today. According to Miles, the kids had a ton of adjectives to describe themselves and they had to cut out/paste together the ones that best described them.
DSC_0102
**Again, I love that he considers himself hilarious. He cracks me up, too.
**It touches my heart that he described himself as good. I see the word "good" and I read as a compilation of "pure, honest, gentle and kind." Yes, Miles is certainly good.
**And, he is shy in some situations. He articulates that so well now. He'll tell me if he's feeling nervous or shy about something - but that rarely stops him from participating. He's learned how to be brave and he's proud of himself after he's been brave.
**I'm proud of Mike and I that he thinks he is tall, because frankly, he's not (proud of us b/c we don't make height an issue with him and if he ever mentions something about size, we deflect it with something like, "you're fast!"). In fact, Miles is a peanut, measuring in at about the 5th percentile. Each year, his height percentile has decreased. Given my/my families' size, I don't expect him to be a giant, but Mike and I have been cautiously noting his "decreasing velocity". At my request, his pediatrician referred us to a pediatric endocrinologist, who did 10 zillion tests on him (it all started with Miles having to fill 5 vials with blood - ugh - and again, we explained it to Miles as 'a check up to make sure he's healthy' - we never mentioned size). All came back negative except for a hand/wrist bone x-ray. Apparently, Miles' bone age is that of a child that has just turned 6 - so his bones are 11 months behind his chronological age. Given that all of Miles' other tests came back negative, the endocrinologist described Miles as a 'late bloomer' (to use layman's terms). Given his young age, its unknown whether he will catch up before puberty; but assuming he doesn't, he'll likely be one of those kids that stays small for a long time and then goes through puberty late in HS/continuing growth through college. Miles probably won't view this as an ideal set-up, but I can think of a zillion worse things. And, hey, he does have that 'hilarious' thing going for him. :)

L.o.v.e this kid. So very much. (And I'm over-the-moon crazy about his toothless smile.)

Griffin

It was SUCH a nice day yesterday. Griffin and I went to gymnastics, and then ventured to the playground and fields at the Y to just hang out.

Yet again, this kid was looking so big to me.
DSC_0213

This dimple makes my stomach do flip-flops. Seriously.
DSC_0183

Someone left a soccer ball in the net and Griffin immediately ran to it. He dribbled it around, kicked it, and even threw up his hands when he scored. Since soccer is pretty much the only team sport that I know anything about, I'd love it if he played some.

But, we'll just have to see what makes him happy. :)

Griffin was all about playing peek-a-boo through the soccer net.

I LOVE pictures of kiddos when the photographer is looking down on the child's face and want to learn how to do that well. I called out, "hey, Griff! Pick your head up and look at me." It cracked me up that he took me so literally. :) I'll keep practicing....

Hints of Spring

It was a chilly, 23-hour day. Bah! Yet, I peeked outside and saw our first hints of spring. Ah! Mike planted a bunch of flowers and things are looking beautiful. It was a great, family-filled Sunday. Hope yours was too.

Parade

We spent Saturday morning with 50,000+ others watching Charlotte's 14th annual Saint Patrick's Day parade through Uptown. There was lots to check out (including several catholic schools, some bizarre tiny tot beauty queens, rockin' roller derby girls (Dana - you would rock the house at roller derby, by the way), amazing kid gymnasts, a huge dancing troupe of girls that were all sporting the same crazy/curly-haired wigs, etc....)

Griffin waved at most everyone that went by (so cute) and stood up to pet every dog (there were lots of rescue animals in the event).

After the parade, we spent a couple of hours at Latta Park - a favorite spot that we've been missing all winter. It was chilly and g-r-e-y, but the kids didn't care. They had fun on the playground, but especially loved the nature trail. It was fun to really watch the dynamic of the three boys. Griffin definitely seems to have graduated to the youngest brother role -- verses the baby of the group. I love it for him and am a little teary about it for me. Thank goodness for the Schubert baby on the way....

Griffin

Feel like I'm way behind on blogging about the boys and what they are up to. I'll try to do a little post about each of them over the next several nights.

***
I had a little parent-teacher conference with Griffin's teachers a few week ago. I love these kinds of sessions, as its always great to hear little stories about what the boys are like when we're not around. Griffin's teachers said that during the first part of the year (pre-Christmas) he was always 'in the mix', but was always quiet. That changed when he returned from school after Christmas break, and they said he now talks up a storm. Initially, he wasn't interested in art, but now he LOVES it. (I love that he's finally at the age where he does his artwork, verses his teachers. Every day when he hops into the car, he starts yelling, "mommy! my art! look at my art!")
DSC_0286

They said he has great fine motor skills and is one of the few kids that can do 'sticker art' all by himself (verses needing help getting the stickers off of the page). This guy loves stickers.
DSC_0288

The teachers also did a tracing exercise with the kids. Griffin traced this circle and then made his own eyes and mouth. They are all crunched up on the top of the circle, but they said he did a great job addding them in the right order and used two larger lines as the eyes and the little dot for the nose.
DSC_0300

I mentioned to the teachers that Griffin talks a lot about one little boy Isaiah and that he sounds like "the cool guy at school that everyone loves". They laughed and agreed that he is just that. They told me a few funny stories about Isaiah and Griffin getting into (innocent) mischief together. They also said that Isaiah is a big 'funny guy' at school and that he makes all of the kids laugh. They said that Griffin seems to really understand his sense of humor ('get the jokes') verses some other kids laugh from a 'that was so silly' perspective. Too funny and I'm not surprised. Griffin is definitely a jokester in our house and is always trying to say and do things to get a laugh. For example, Miles yelled out "eat more chicken!" the other night, after we sang Happy Birthday to Dana (a common trend with school-age kids is to follow up the H.B. song with the the Chik Filet slogan - who knows why) and Griffin, not missing a beat, yelled out, "No - eat more pepperoni!" and then burst out laughing. He's always cracking himself up with his own jokes. It kills me.
DSC_0187
He's growing up fast, trying to keep up with this brothers. We'll still working on potty training (he's got it down, but sometimes with #2 he prefers the hide-in-the-corner routine, instead of rushing to the bathroom). Today he was successful in the bathroom, so I offered him a piece of candy as a treat. He said, "no thanks, mom. I'd rather just play wii as my treat." Well, hello, youngest child! My how things change with the birth order of the family. :)
DSC_0215
Griffin still LOVES dogs and has already asked for a "doggy 3rd birthday party". He continues to take a weekly gymnastics class at the Y, with a few of his buddies, Kate, Aston, Mia, and Jack. He loves it so much that he asks to go to "nastics" almost every day. We took a music class for a few months and he really got into it and he also loves to play outside. He has the best time throwing, kicking, and catching balls. I'm already excited to sign him up for sports next year. Overall, he's a fun little guy to have around and we all dig him. So. very. much.

Little Fingers, Little Toes

The word it o-u-t and we couldn't be more excited. Mike is ready to unload our entire attic. I'm ready to snuggle up to a little one for hours on end. CAN NOT WAIT!!! Check it out here.

Rock Star Wedding

On February 27th, my superstar sister married the man of her dreams. "Happiness" does not begin to articulate our excitement about this wedding.

Dana started her festivities off with her bridesmaids' luncheon. She looked amazing.
DSC_0059
Love this picture of Dana & my mom. They planned an AMAZING weekend.
Wedding - Dana & Mom
It was so great to see so many relatives (back row: Lindsey (VA), Dana (NC), my mom's younger sister, Fran (Germany); front row: Kristen (IL), my mom's older sister, Phyllis (FL), my cousin Marc's wife, Kim (FL), my mom (SC), my mom's mother, Grandma T (FL)

My mom, talking to my niece Mason (the flower girl). I think she looks b.e.u.t.i.f.u.l. in this photo.

Dana and Brad's mom, Rachel. Dana is marrying into an amazing family. Rachel is also one of three girls, who have such a strong bond. I adore her.
Wedding - Dana & Rachel

I love wedding rehearsals. The walk through. The giddy moments. The anticipation. These two pictures of Dana and my dad are the only ones I took the entire night (= no pics from the rehearsal or the fun afterwards = bummer!), but I love them both.

Wedding Rehearsal - Dana & Dad

Before the ceremony, Dana and Brad had a "first look". Dana's sweet friend, Neely, and I walked Dana to the location where Brad was meeting her. Brad had called her on a walkie talkie to tell her he & the photographer were ready for her.
Wedding - Dana & Neely
Their first look was truly one of the romantic moments I've ever seen. They met each other in a beautiful alley in Charleson. They shared a few amazing/private moments together (ok, there were a few faraway onlookers, like myself) and then when they were ready, their photographer snapped a zillion amazing photos. It was incredible to watch -- to see them bond in private on the wedding day -- and then share the big event with everyone in the ceremony.
DSC_0139
Miles was the ring bearer. My niece, Mason, was the flower girl. Clearly, they were stoked about their big jobs!
DSC_0169
By the time we got to the church, Miles was a little nervous -- but when the time came, he did awesome.
DSC_0202
Noah walked down the aisle with Mason and Miles. I was nervous that he would have a hard time standing still during the ceremony, but he stood still, and smiled through it (literally). He was SO PROUD of himself when it was all over.

Check out how happy/relaxed Dana was just before she walked down the aisle. First look, people. Its the way to go.

Cute Lindsey Loo
Wedding - Lindsey
Cute shoes. It should be mandatory for boys to wear chucks with their tuxes. That cute.
DSC_0185
No more wedding pics - but I have to add that it was the most amazing ceremony. My Uncle John married them. My Uncle Bruce did the readings. My dad sang the doxology from the balcony before everyone walked down the aisle. Brad and Dana wrote their own amazing vows. There was not a dry eye in the church. Even Lindsey - who NEVER cries - was sobbing before Dana even reached the end of the aisle. It was that amazing.

Sweet Griffin hung with a babysitter during the ceremony. By the time we were heading over the reception in the trolley, he was clinging to his turtle, so tired.
DSC_0225

Somehow, as obsessed I am with pictures, this is our only family shot of the night (us with Mike's sister Shannon and her daughter Mason). Wondering where Noah was at the time....maybe his 10th stop at the candy table? :)
IMG_0283

It was an amazing night! Lindsey posted some reception pictures, too. It was fun for Mike and I to be back at the SC Aquarium almost 10 years after we had our reception there. And their reception was amazing -- best food. best band. amazing touches. Mom - you outdid yourself! (and great work by Dad, Dana, and Brad, too. :)

Our family is complete (except for lots of future little ones, that is)! WAHOO!
